Microsoft quietly shuts down Office Genuine Advantage program

Source Material: ZDNET

Late last week, with absolutely no public announcement, Microsoft quietly retired one cog in its antipiracy machine.
An anonymous tipster informed me on Friday that Microsoft had shut down its Office Genuine Advantage (OGA) program as of Thursday, December 16. Previously, if you wanted to download an Office add-in or template, you had to pass through a validation step first, confirming that your copy of Office was “genuine.” ……

Secondary Installer AutoCAD 2009

Issue
To reset the default AutoCAD 2009 user settings, you want to initiate the secondary installer.

Solution
To reset the AutoCAD 2009 default user settings, you must first delete your application files and registry entries for the program. Follow these steps:

Note: Make sure that you back up any customized AutoCAD 2009 files before starting this procedure. CLICK HERE FOR STEPS

1. Log on to the workstation as the user.
2. On the Start menu (Windows), click Run.
3. In the Run dialog box, enter regedit.
4. In the Registry Editor, locate the following subkey and delete it:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk\AutoCAD\ R17.2\ACAD-7001:409
5. Exit the Registry Editor.
6. In XP using Windows Explorer, locate and delete the following application folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Autodesk\AutoCAD 2009 (backup this directory first)
C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Application Data\Autodesk\AutoCAD 2009

7. In Vista / Windows 7

C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\ AutoCAD 2009 (backup this directory first)
C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Autodesk\ AutoCAD 2009

The user should now be able to launch AutoCAD 2009. When the product is opened, the files and folders that were deleted will be recreated by the secondary installer.

Factoid : Autodesk book meets criteria for collectors item?

Note from Duane: This is a non technical support post: I will pull this off the site if it didn’t get more interesting by the week.
=============
I was talking with a programmer this morning, and I recommended a book I had purchased a couple years back. The book was: VB.NET Programming for AutoCAD Customization – Level 1 (Spiral-bound).
I went to Amazon to see if was still in print. There were 2 copies that were being sold. What surprised me was the price. Both copies were USED, the conditions ranged from acceptable to good. The prices were $777 the other is $895.  I just checked the site again yesterday and there is a third one that is used which is in “Very Good” condition going for $1100 dollars:  AmazonLink

32 Bit Deployments on 64 Bit OS : Longbow Software

Source Material : Autodesk Technical Support

NOTE:
This post was originally titled for Map 3D 2011 32 bit deployment on a 64 bit win 7. They had need to migrate to 64 bit box.
Bentley products they were using worked on 64 bit OS but not 64 bit Map.  The title was broadened in scope afterwards.

issue:
You have need to deploy 32 bit AutoCAD Map 3D 2011 on a 64 bit box. And you are unable to do this.

Autodesk Official Stance: unsupported combination:
=====excerpt from Autodesk Tech Support=======
I confirmed this with both the MAP and Install team. Because there are both a 32 and 64bit version of MAP available, you will only be allowed to install the correct version on your corresponding OS.
There was a similar discussion here: Ultimately, the resolution needs to come from Bentley to work on a 64bit version of MAP. Aside from this, the user may need to keep a 32bit computer to use for this workflow.
I apologize for this inconvenience.
========================================

NOTE: The possible solution is mentioned in the above link to a discussion board topic.  The link to Longbow Software referenced in the discussion board is here.
NOTE: ATG has not tested this and cannot say it will work. This is unsupported combination.  The software claims to work with the following products.

Network License Cascading Behavior: Is cascading sequence within a suite allowed or not? YES it is

The following Network License Cascading Scenario is what is being floored with Autodesk Technical Support.  We will post their results early next week.

!!! Autodesk has confirmed this is standard behavior, with the nuance being that this dependent on the order in which the products are launched. (see below)

=========================================
NOTE:
ATG Tech support has tested the following scenario out on a laptop (setup as a network) and was able to successfully launch all three products simultaneously on the laptop. With a single seat suite license configured on LMTOOLS.  This was a singular test and no attempt to duplicate it on another computer was made.
==========================================

EXAMPLE:
Network License:
AutoCAD Revit Architecture Suite 2011 (1 seat)  [this is the only license in the file]
============
user 1 has software loaded
AutoCAD 2011
AutoCAD Architecture 2011
AutoCAD Revit Architecture 2011
============
user 1 launches the following in order:
AutoCAD 2011 (pulls AutoCAD Revit Architecture Suite 2011 1 seat)
AutoCAD Architecture 2011 (will or will not launch, being confirmed with Autodesk, cascading within suite license may not be possible)
AutoCAD Revit Architecture 2011 (will or will not launch, being confirmed with Autodesk, cascading within suite license may not be possible)
============
excerpt from Autodesk Technical Support:
According to the notes that …. included in the Service Request, your question was also about whether the products within a Suite can use the same license simultaneously. The answer is that they cannot.
============
NOTE: This response is being verified by Autodesk for accuracy.

=========================================
UPDATE: excerpt from Autodesk Technical Support:
It was very good to speak with you just now and discuss the expected behavior of the Suites license. The behavior you observed, of being able to open all the products in the Suites pulling on the one network license on the server is correct.

As we spoke about, I was able to confirm with Scott that depending on the order you launch the products (generally going from top to bottom in the Cascading order), the products will all launch. This could change if there are other licenses available as for example, an AutoCAD or some other product.

2011 Cascading Behavior of Network Licenses

Source material: TechSource Doc

When a product is used it uses the least expensive license matching product and version.

There are other examples to be added later today.

==========================
example:Network License Contains multiple products.
AutoCAD Architecture 2011 1 seat
AutoCAD MEP 2011 1 seat
AutoCAD Revit Architecture Suite 2011 1 seat
AutoCAD Revit MEP Suite 2011 1 seat
==========================
user 1, and 2 Software Installed
AutoCAD Architecture 2011
AutoCAD MEP 2011
==========================
user 1 launches products on computer
AutoCAD Architecture 2011 (used: AutoCAD Architecture 2011 1 seat)
AutoCAD MEP 2011 (used: AutoCAD MEP 2011 1 seat)
==========================
user 2 THEN launches product on computer
AutoCAD Architecture 2011 (used: AutoCAD Revit Architecture Suite 2011 1 seat)
AutoCAD MEP 2011 (used: AutoCAD Revit MEP Suite 2011 1 seat)
==========================
NOTES:
In the above example it doesn’t matter the Serial Number of the AutoCAD Architecture 2011 (it will need to be an registered networked version)
the logic here, is that the license manager controls the seats concurrently in use, irregardless of how the product was installed, or if the product disk was packaged in a suite or not.The following is the official cascading behaviour from autodesk.

LMTOOLS report the MAC address as ffffffff on Teamed Network Adapters

Source Material: Discussion Board, Wikepedia

=======
11.7 will report the MAC address as ffffffff for teamed adapters. Teamed network adapters are not supported by FLEXlm. 11.4 and 11.5 report the correct teamed MAC address even though they do not support teamed adapters. I am uncertain on how 11.6 and 11.8 report a teamed address. Did you install the 11.8 lmgrd.exe? What was the result?
=======

Ethernet Teaming is not officially supported with licensing and cannot be guaranteed to work in all cases.  Basically, the customer wants to set up more bandwidth by combining 2 network cards into 1 card.

Recommendation:
You should un-team these adapters, enable a disabled adapter, or install an additional adapter and acquire a new license file for that MAC address.
