How to enable Windows Installer logging

Windows Installer can use logging to help assist in troubleshooting issues with installing software packages. This logging is enabled by adding keys and values to the registry. After the entries have been added and enabled, you can retry the problem installation and Windows Installer will track the progress and post it to the Temp folder. The new log’s file name is random, but begins with the letters “Msi” and end with a .log extension. To locate the Temp folder location, type the following line at a command prompt:
====================
NOTE:
This should be used only for troubleshooting purposes and should not be left on because it will have adverse effects on system performance and disk space. Each time you use the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel, a new Msi*.log file is created.
====================
cd %temp%
To have us enable or disable Windows Installer logging for you, go to the “Fix it for me” section. If you would rather enable Windows Installer logging yourself, go to the “Let me fix it myself” section.

Video Card Configuration Troubleshooting Guide: AutoCAD AutoCAD Verticals

Published date: 2010-Apr-15
ID: TS1070054

You want to determine whether the stability issues your AutoCAD® vertical product is experiencing are due to your system’s video card or the drivers associated with it.

First, ensure that your Windows® operating system is up to date. For instructions on updating you operating system, refer to solution TS1069997.

Repair the installation of the product by following these steps:

Exit the product.
Click Start menu (Windows) > Settings > Control Panel.
Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
Select the product and click Change/Remove.
Select the Reinstall or Repair option.
Select Repair my and then click Next.
Update your Autodesk product with the most recent service pack and all hotfixes that have been published since the last service pack was released (or that explicitly are described as a post-service pack hotfix). Follow these steps:

Go to the Autodesk Website
Click the Services & Support link.
Under Product Support, select the product that you want to check for updates.
Click the Data & Downloads link.
Click the Updates & Service Packs link.
Locate your product version and install all the appropriate updates or service packs to update your product.
Restart your computer.
If there is no improvement in stability after applying these service packs and hotfixes, refer to the following website for a list of the recommended cards and drivers for AutoCAD® products to determine if your video graphics hardware is compatible:

Graphics Compabible

This list is updated to reflect the results of Autodesk Quality Assurance tests. You should always download the recommended drivers directly from this list, as this is the exact configuration tested by Autodesk.
If the same issues persist, disable hardware acceleration for the video card:
For 2006 AutoCAD-based products and earlier versions
Click Format menu > Options.
Click the System tab.
Under Current 3D Graphics Display, click Properties.
Under Acceleration, select Software.
Click Apply & Close.
Click OK.
Restart the application.
For 2007 AutoCAD-based products and later versions

On the command line, enter 3dconfig.
Click Manual Tune.
Clear the Enable Hardware Acceleration check box.
Click OK to close each dialog box.
Restart the application.
If the stability issues are still occurring (especially during startup), you can limit the interaction that the product has with the video card during startup to avoid these issues.

Note: The following procedure can only be performed on AutoCAD 2007-based products or later versions.

For example, to modify Architectural Desktop 2007 in this manner

Create a copy of the shortcut icon used to start Architectural Desktop 2007.
Select the icon, and then right-click it. On the shortcut menu, click Properties.
The following string will be in the Target box:

“C:\Program Files\Autodesk Architectural Desktop 2007\acad.exe” /ld “C:\Program Files\Autodesk Architectural Desktop 2007\AecBase50.dbx” /p “Architectural Desktop – Imperial”

Move to the end of this string and add the following with a space in front of the “/”:

/nohardware
The full entry will now read as follows:

“C:\Program Files\Autodesk Architectural Desktop 2007\acad.exe” /ld “C:\Program Files\Autodesk Architectural Desktop 2007\AecBase50.dbx” /p “Architectural Desktop – Imperial” /nohardware

Note: These file paths are based on the default installation path of the specified product. You will need to modify them if you chose to install to a custom location or are modifying a different product.

If the stability issues persist, start Windows in Diagnostic mode to determine whether other applications are interfering with the AutoCAD-based product. To run Windows in Diagnostic mode, follow the instructions in solution TS1054234 .

If the product ran without issue in Diagnostic mode, then the configuration of Windows (including the configuration of the personal OS system or other programs loaded onto it) may be causing conflict with the AutoCAD-based product.

If running the application in Diagnostic mode did not resolve the issue, then you may be experiencing a hardware or operating system issue, and you should consider performing a clean installation of Windows®. To ensure a clean installation of Windows, install Windows directly from the original installation media provided by Microsoft. Avoid using any OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) customized installations or recovery images that may have come with your computer. After you have reinstalled Windows, apply all of the current updates available from Windows Update.

Install the Autodesk product and the recommended video drivers onto the clean installation of Windows, but do not install any other software. If the Autodesk product continues to experience stability issues, then it is likely that your computer’s hardware is causing the problems.

•Autodesk Material Library 2011 Base Image Library
    •Autodesk Material Library 2011
  4. After the product is uninstalled, use Windows Explorer to locate and delete the following folders as appropriate.  For steps 3 & 4 substitute the product name below based on which Revit 2011 product you are uninstalling; all paths listed by default are for Revit Architecture 2011:
    Autodesk Revit Architecture 2011 & RAC 2011
    Autodesk Revit Structure 2011 & RST 2011
    Autodesk Revit MEP 2011 & RME 2011

Where %username% is present below substitute the current Windows login name.

For Windows XP installations (32 and 64 bit):
•  C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Revit Architecture 2011
•  C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Autodesk\REVIT\2011

  • Restart the workstation.

Before reinstalling Revit products

  1. In Windows Explorer, delete the contents of your Windows Temp folder, but do not delete the Windows Temp folder itself. You can locate the Temp folder by entering %TEMP% in the Address bar of Windows Explorer.
  2. Use the End Task feature to end any anti-virus programs.

Note: Disabling anti-virus programs from the system tray may not be sufficient. Virus checking programs may block certain activities that are seen as suspicious (for example, accessing the registry, adding/removing/updating DLL files, and so on), even though these activities are common when installing or removing programs.

Several anti-virus programs can be disabled by right-clicking the taskbar icon and selecting Disable from the shortcut menu. For more information about disabling your anti-virus software, refer to the vendor of that software.

Important! It is important that you not only disable the anti-virus software but also use the End Task feature to end the anti-virus software.

To verify that an anti-virus program is not still running in the background as a TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident Program):

Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7

  1. Press [Ctrl] + [Alt] + [Delete].
  2. Click Task Manager.
  3. On the Processes tab of the Task Manager, select the process for the anti-virus program and then click End Process.

You are now ready to install Revit 2011 products on the clean system.
